"Percent" means "out of 100". In Class 5, children learn that 50% is the same as 1/2, 25% is 1/4, and that a test score of 18 out of 20 is 90%. It's the first time fractions, decimals and percentages are connected, which makes it one of the most useful topics of the year.
What your child should know
- 1% means 1 part out of 100 equal parts.
- 50% = 1/2, 25% = 1/4, 10% = 1/10, 100% = the whole.
- To find 10% of a number, divide it by 10.
- Percentages, fractions and decimals are three ways to write the same amount.
