  • maths

Factors and multiples are two sides of the same idea. The factors of 12 are the numbers that divide it exactly (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12). The multiples of 3 are the numbers in the 3 times table (3, 6, 9, 12…). This Class 4 topic is the base for HCF, LCM and fractions in later classes.

What your child should know

  • A factor divides a number exactly, with no remainder.
  • Every number has 1 and itself as factors.
  • Multiples of a number never end: 4, 8, 12, 16…
  • If 3 is a factor of 12, then 12 is a multiple of 3.

  • Play "buzz": count aloud and say "buzz" on every multiple of 3.
  • Find factors in pairs so none are missed.
