Decimals show parts of a whole using place value: 0.5 is five tenths, 0.08 is eight hundredths. Children meet them every day in prices (₹45.50) and measurements (1.5 kg). In Class 5 they learn to compare, add and subtract decimals, and the biggest source of mistakes is lining up the decimal point.
What your child should know
- After the decimal point come tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths.
- To compare decimals, compare digit by digit from the left: 2.54 is greater than 2.45.
- Line up the decimal points when adding or subtracting.
- 5 + 0.08 = 5.08, not 5.8. The 8 is in the hundredths place.

How to practise decimals at home
- Use money: ₹12.50 + ₹7.25 is decimal addition children already understand.
- Write decimals in a place-value chart until lining up becomes automatic.
- Ask for estimates first: 4.9 + 3.2 is "about 8".

Frequently asked questions
- What decimals are taught in Class 5?
- Tenths and hundredths (and sometimes thousandths), converting simple fractions to decimals, comparing decimals and adding and subtracting them.
- What is the most common mistake with decimals?
- Not lining up the decimal point, and thinking a longer decimal is bigger (that 0.25 is bigger than 0.3). Comparing digit by digit from the left fixes both.
