Telling the time and reading a calendar are skills children use every day: when school starts, how many days until a birthday, which month Diwali falls in. In Class 2, children learn to read the hour and half-hour on a clock, the days of the week and the months of the year.
What your child should know
- The short hand shows the hour; the long hand shows the minutes.
- There are 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year.
- The days of the week and months of the year always come in the same order.
- Counting forward on a calendar: two days after Wednesday is Friday.

Frequently asked questions
- What should a Class 2 child know about time?
- Reading the hour and half-hour on an analogue clock, knowing there are 24 hours in a day, and naming the days of the week and months of the year in order.
- How do I teach my child to read a clock?
- Start with the hour hand only ("it's pointing at 3, so it's 3 o'clock"), then add half past. A real clock at home, checked a few times a day, works better than worksheets alone.
