Class 2 Multiplication Questions with Answers
Class 2 multiplication practice: equal groups, times tables and word problems, with answers and explanations.

Class 2 is when most children meet multiplication. The key idea is equal groups: 3 bags with 4 sweets each is 4 + 4 + 4, which we write as 3 × 4 = 12. Once that clicks, times tables stop being a list to memorise and start making sense.
What your child should know
- Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups: 5 × 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2.
- Order doesn't change the answer: 3 × 4 = 4 × 3.
- Anything multiplied by 0 is 0, and anything multiplied by 1 stays the same.
- Tables of 2, 5 and 10 come first; they follow easy patterns.
5 Multiplication questions with answers
Read each question with your child and let them answer before you open Show answer.
Q1. A farmer has 9 baskets. Each basket has 0 apples. How many apples are there in all?
A) 0
B) 9
C) 90
D) 1
Show answer
Answer: A) 0
9 × 0 = 0.
- Nine baskets, but nothing in them.
- Nothing plus nothing stays nothing.
Common mistake: 9 only counts the baskets, not apples.
Remember: Anything times 0 is 0.
Q2. There are 3 plates. Each plate has 4 cookies. How many cookies are there in all?
A) 7
B) 12
C) 10
D) 15
Show answer
Answer: B) 12
4 + 4 + 4 makes 12.
- 3 groups of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4.
Common mistake: Adding 3 + 4 gives 7, but groups repeat.
Remember: Equal groups mean repeated adding.
Q3. 5 x 3 = ?
A) 10
B) 15
C) 20
D) 8
Show answer
Answer: B) 15
5 x 3 means 5 added 3 times (5+5+5), which equals 15.
Q4. Kai counts by 3s: 3, 6, 9, 12, and keeps going. What is the 7th number he says?
A) 21
B) 18
C) 24
D) 20
Show answer
Answer: A) 21
7 counts of 3 is 3 x 7 = 21.
- 5th is 15, 6th is 18
- 7th is 21
Common mistake: 18 is the 6th number, not the 7th.
Remember: Count the places carefully.
Q5. You know 4 x 3 = 12. Using that fact, what is 8 x 3?
A) 20
B) 15
C) 24
D) 36
Show answer
Answer: C) 24
Doubling the groups doubles the total.
- 8 is double 4
- So double the total, 12 + 12
Common mistake: 15 adds only one more group of 3.
Remember: Double the groups, double the total.
How to practise multiplication at home
- Make equal groups with real things, like 4 plates with 3 biscuits each, and count the total.
- Skip-count out loud while climbing stairs: 2, 4, 6, 8…
- Use known facts to find new ones. If 4 × 3 = 12, then 4 × 6 is double that.

Frequently asked questions
- Which times tables should a Class 2 child know?
- Most Class 2 syllabi cover tables from 2 to 10, starting with 2, 5 and 10. Understanding equal groups matters more than reciting tables quickly at this stage.
- How can I make multiplication easier for my child?
- Show it as equal groups with real objects first, then link it to skip counting. Short daily practice of a few facts works better than drilling a whole table at once.
