Addition is the first real "operation" a Class 1 child learns: putting two groups together and finding how many there are altogether. Most children start by counting on their fingers, which is completely fine. The goal by the end of Class 1 is to add numbers up to 20 confidently, and to know small facts like 3 + 4 without counting.
What your child should know
- Adding means putting together. 2 apples and 3 apples make 5 apples.
- Counting on: start from the bigger number and count up (for 8 + 3, say "8… 9, 10, 11").
- The order doesn't matter: 4 + 2 is the same as 2 + 4.
- Adding 0 doesn't change a number, and adding 1 gives the next number.

How to practise addition at home
- Use real objects such as buttons, blocks or rotis on a plate, before moving to written sums.
- Practise "number bonds to 10" (1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7…) as a quick game in the car.
- Turn sums into tiny stories: "You had 5 crayons and Didi gave you 2 more…"

Frequently asked questions
- What addition should a Class 1 child know?
- By the end of Class 1 most children add single-digit numbers and numbers up to about 20, understand that addition means putting together, and can solve simple one-step word problems.
- Is it okay for my child to count on fingers?
- Yes. Fingers are a natural first tool. With regular practice children move to counting on from the bigger number and then to simply remembering facts like 6 + 3 = 9.
