Tenses tell us when something happens. In Class 4, children practise the simple present, past and future (she sings, she sang, she will sing) and the continuous forms (she is singing, she was singing). Choosing the right tense is one of the most common grammar questions in school tests and the IEO.
What your child should know
- A verb shows an action or a state of being: run, smiled, is.
- Present: I play. Past: I played. Future: I will play.
- Continuous tenses use is/am/are/was/were + -ing: She is singing now.
- Time words help: yesterday (past), now (present), tomorrow (future).
