A noun is a naming word: the name of a person (teacher, Aarav), a place (school, Mumbai), an animal (tiger) or a thing (table). Nouns are the first part of speech children learn in Class 2, and finding them in sentences builds the base for all other grammar.

What your child should know

  • A noun names a person, place, animal or thing.
  • Names of particular people and places (Riya, Delhi) start with a capital letter.
  • Most sentences have at least one noun.
  • Words like run, fast and happily are not nouns. They describe actions or how things are done.
