If your child has come home with an Olympiad form, you're not alone in wondering what it actually is. This guide explains Olympiad exams for primary-school children in plain English: what they are, who runs them, whether they're worth it, and how to prepare without stress.
What does "Olympiad" mean?
The word comes from ancient Greece, where an Olympiad was the four-year gap between Olympic Games. Today it also means a competition, and in schools an Olympiad is a subject competition: a maths Olympiad, a science Olympiad, an English Olympiad and so on.
What is an Olympiad exam for school children?
A school Olympiad is a multiple-choice paper taken at your child's own school, usually about an hour long. It is based on the school syllabus for your child's class, but the questions ask children to think with what they know, not just remember it. Most papers also have a logical reasoning section.
Common Olympiad subjects for Classes 1–5 are maths, science, English, computers, general knowledge and reasoning. Some organisers also run a Hindi Olympiad.
Who conducts Olympiads in India?
- Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF): the largest, with IMO (maths), NSO (science), IEO (English), NCO (computers) and IGKO (GK).
- Silverzone, Unified Council (best known for NSTSE) and the Hindustan Olympiad are other well-known organisers.
Our guide to Olympiad exams for Classes 1–5 compares them.
How does an Olympiad work?
- Registration through school. The school's Olympiad coordinator collects names and a small fee.
- Level 1 at school. Everyone takes this round on a date the school picks.
- Level 2 for top performers. From Class 3 upwards, the best scorers can qualify for a second round. Classes 1 and 2 usually take Level 1 only.
- Results and certificates. Children get a certificate and a rank, and top rankers win medals or prizes.
Is an Olympiad worth it for a Class 1–5 child?
For most children, yes, as long as it stays light. The real benefits are:
- Thinking beyond the textbook: applying a concept to a new kind of question.
- Exam practice: a timed paper with an answer sheet, in a low-pressure setting.
- A clear picture of strengths: the score report shows which areas need work.
- Confidence: a certificate for trying matters a lot to a 7-year-old.
It isn't worth it if it turns into hours of extra tuition. One Olympiad in a subject your child enjoys is a great start.
How to prepare at home
- Ten to fifteen minutes a day of mixed practice from the school syllabus.
- A few logical reasoning questions every day, since every paper has them.
- One timed practice paper a week in the last month.
- Talk through wrong answers: "why did you pick that?"
