"Odd one out" questions show a child four things and ask which one doesn't belong. To answer, they have to spot what the other three have in common, like all fruits, all animals or all shapes. It's one of the simplest and most useful reasoning skills, and a regular in Class 1 Olympiad papers.
What your child should know
- First find what three of the items share; the fourth is the odd one.
- Groups can be about type (animals), use (things we write with) or shape.
- Always ask "why?". The reason matters more than the answer.
- Sometimes two answers seem possible; look for the clearest rule.
